MANILa, Philippines – Mary Joy Tabal became the latest casualty of the Philippine contingent after clocking 3:02:27 in women's marathon at the Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazili, Sunday night.
Tabal, who nearly bowed to exhaustion with still roughly 15 kilometers left, finished 124th in a field of 157 runners. Only 133 athletes have completed the race.
A marathon spans a total of 42.195 kilometers.
Eventual gold medalist Jemima Sumgong of Kenya was far away ahead by almost 38 minutes.
Tabal, a native of Cebu, originally set her sights on beating her national personal record of 2:43:47. Her body started to not keep up when she reached the 30th kilometer of the race.
