MANILA, Philippines – The Spikers Turf, the country's only indoor volleyball league in the country today, will hold its second season starting with the Open Conference set on May 28 at The Arena in San Juan City.
Reigning Reinforced Conference champion Cignal leads the six-team cast that also included Instituto Estetico Manila, Phl Air Force, Phl Navy, Bounty Fresh and a still unnamed team by newly elected Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez.
Ricky Palou, who leads the group organizing the Spikers' Turf, said games will start at 1 p.m. and will be held the same day as the Shakey's V-League, its women's counterpart now on its 13th season.
"We believe in men's volleyball that's why we have the Spikers' Turf," said Palou.
Also expected to challenge for the crown is Air Force and Navy, which finished second and fourth, respectively, in the Reinforced Conference.
The Airmen, in particular, will be a potent force having placed third in this same Open Conference last year by beating Cignal.
Air Force made it to the finals in the Reinforced Conference only to lose to Cignal, which was led by eventual Finals MVP Edward Ybanez.
Expected to draw some of the attention is Gomez, the popular actor, athlete-turned politician who is expected to spearhead his own team that also include veteran blocker Rocky Honrade.
