MANILA, Philippines – University of the Philippines sustained its impressive defensive play to turn back University of Santo Tomas, 3-0, and progress to the UAAP Season 78 men's football finals Thursday at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.
The top-ranked Fighting Maroons achieved their seventh straight clean sheet, but coach Anto Gonzales is simply wanting to get the best come next week's one-game championship.
"We don't think about that streak. We are trying to improve in every passing game and that's we are going to work on in the next game," said Gonzales.
Seeking to regain the crown it won in 2013, UP will face either De La Salle or Ateneo for all the marbles at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Malate venue.
Daniel Gadia facilitated the Maroons' two first half goals which left the Growling Tigers biting the dust.
A left-footed goal by rookie Kyle Magdato from a Gadia assist on the 22nd minute to open the scoring for UP.
Another newcomer, King Miyagi scored from a beautiful pass by Gadia in the 37th minute made it 2-0 for the Maroons.
"Well that's what can you get from Gadia. Winning the ball and his tenacious play," said Gonzales.
Raphael Resuma then sealed the win for UP which a stoppage time goal which came so easy.
The Maroons, who are eyeing their 17th championship, are making their sixth Finals appearance in the last eight seasons.
