AFP outclasses NHA, makes UNTV finals
MANILA, Philippines - Armed Forces of the Philippines got back at National Housing Authority, scoring an 88-78 victory to advance to the finals of the fourth UNTV Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City last Friday.
The AFP Cavaliers came out fresh and strong off a long break following their romp in the two-phase elims, dominating the Builders from start to finish to secure a return trip to the finals.
The Cavaliers, who came into the match with a twice-to-beat edge, also avenged their 76-96 loss to the Builders in the elims of the event presented by UNTV through its CEO and president Daniel Razon.
Winners of the annual event two years ago, AFP will face either the Philippine National Police or Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) in the finals tentatively set on Feb. 28.
Led by former University of the East player Ollan Omiping, the PNP Responders defeated the MMDA Blackwolves, 77-72, to force a rubber match in their side of the semis. They dispute the second finals berth on Sunday.
Omiping led the Responders with 19 points but it was Police Officer 1 Alejandro Yanquiling III who delivered the clutch shots and finished with 16 points.
Technical Sergeant Rolando Pascual emerged as the best player for the Cavaliers as he powered his way to 23 points on nine-of-16 shooting from the field.
Corporal Eugene Tan also shone for the Cavaliers with seven markers, seven boards, seven assists and three steals.
