MANILA, Philippines – Pope Francis’ influence has reached even the world of sports, particularly boxing.

This after the World Boxing Council (WBC) named the leader of the Catholic Church the “Champion for kindness, virtue and hope” during the Pope’s recent visit to Mexico.

In a photo released by the WBC through its official website, Pope Francis is seen receiving a green WBC championship belt from the Mexico-based boxing organization’s president Mauricio Sulaiman.

“The Green and Gold for the Champion of kindness, virtue and hope – Pope Francis received our most most precious jewel from Mr. Mauricio Sulaiman Saldivar, WBC President,” said a short write-up that accompanied the photo.

The release had the headline “Pope Francis, Champion of Faith”.

The WBC is one of the world’s major sanctioning organizations. Its green belt is among the most coveted by boxers and considered a collector’s item. - Dino Maragay
