MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo Lady Eagles kick off their bid for a three-peat today against National U in a battle of powerhouse teams highlighting the opener of the UAAP Season 78 women’s volleyball tourney at the Filoil Flying V Arena.
Two-time MVP Alyssa Valdez spearheads the Lady Eagles anew, hoping to help extend their reign before she signs off on her storied collegiate career.
Last year’s Finals MVP Amy Ahomiro, Jho Maraguinot, Bea de Leon and setter Jia Morado are expected to provide solid support as Ateneo tries to adjust to playing without Denden Lazaro, Ella de Jesus and Aeriel Patnongon, who all graduated, and Michelle Morente, who is sitting out the season due to academic reasons.
The Lady Eagles face a stiff challenge right on opening day with the Lady Bulldogs squad of Jaja Santiago, Myla Pablo, Jorelle Singh, Ivy Perez, Bia General, and comebacking Aiko Urdas determined to give AdMU a rare defeat in the 4 p.m. encounter. The Lady Eagles have won their last 18 games dating back to the finals of Season 77.
“The team is doing okay,” said NU coach Roger Gorayeb, whose squad is looking to end a long title drought.
