Chiefs nip Falcons; Mariners stop Eagles

MANILA, Philippines - Donald Gumaru hit a jumper at the buzzer as Arellano U edged Adamson U, 77-76, while Philippine Merchant Marine School subdued Ateneo, 65-56, in the 12th Fr. Martin Cup Collegiate Open basketball tournament at the FEU gym in Morayta last weekend.

Gumaru’s endgame heroics extended the Chiefs’ win run to three to pace Group B with Letran-A staying within sight with a 2-0 card after thwarting University of the East, 58-53.

Elvin Chan and Jake Yagonia combined for 27 points as the Mariners, who used a 12-0 run to take charge in the third, snapped the Eagles’ four-game streak.

Vince Tolentino scored 11 points for Ateneo.

In other games, Manuel L. Quezon University crushed College of St. Benilde, 66-50, to improve to 2-1 in Group A while Mapua blasted Letran-B, 96-52, for a 1-1 card.
