FIBA lifts suspension from Mexico

Associated Press

MIES — Basketball's world governing body has ended a ban on Mexico that threatened its place in a 2016 Olympics men's qualifying tournament.

FIBA says its executive committee lifted a suspension imposed in November to penalize the Mexican government for alleged interference in how sports federations were run.

Mexico is now cleared to play in an Olympic entry tournament in July.

FIBA will draw the qualifying match schedule next Tuesday.

Officials in Mexico had suggested the country could be barred from the Rio de Janeiro Games because of a dispute over a government agency inspecting finances of sports bodies.

However, the International Olympic Committee said last month there was no risk of exclusion.
