AFP, MMDA gun for UNTV semifinal slots

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) try to secure the first two outright semis berths when they clash with separate rivals tomorrow in the fourth UNTV Cup at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig.

Already assured of playoff berth, the Cavaliers clash with the National Housing Authority (NHA) Builders at 3:30 p.m. while the Blackwolves collide with the Senate Defenders at 5 p.m.

Out to lead the Cavaliers are Eugene Tan, Boyet Bautista and Winston Sergio – the same players who keyed the team’s 106-98 win over the Defenders last month. The victory gave them a 6-1 record before the league took a holiday break.

Backstopped by former La Salle star Johnedel Cardel, the Blackwolves are sporting a 6-2 record – thanks to a 67-64 win over the Philippine National Police (PNP) the last time.

But breathing down their necks are defending champion Judiciary and Bureau of Fire Protection who tote similar 5-3 records.

The Judiciary Magis are hoping to close out their elimination campaign on a high note when they battle the PNP Responders at 7 p.m.

The Magis dropped their first three games but went on to win their next five games through the inspired performances of former PBA player Don Camaso, Ariel Capus and Warren Ybañez.

The champion team in the event organized by UNTV president and CEO Daniel Razon will receive P2 million which it will donate to its chosen charity.
