McGregor ends Aldo's decade-long reign with one punch

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -- Connor McGregor backed up his bragging and dethroned long-time featherweight titleholder with a smashing 13-second victory at UFC  194 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday.

Billed as the most anticipated fight of the year, McGrgegor ended Aldo's decade-long reign by knocking out the once mighty champion in only 13 seconds to emerge the undisputed featherweight champion.

It was a shocking victory for McGregor, who was coming into the fight as an underdog.

But McGregor, who has gauded Aldo for almost a year, needed just one punch to send Aldo falling like a tree face first.

The Irish known as "The Notorious," then finished off Aldo with a pair of hammer fist, forching the suprisingly quick stoppage.

McGregor, 27, thus improved to 19-2 including 15 straight matches that he strung together in a four-year span.

He also sent Aldo, 29, to the latter's first defeat in 18 straight fights spanning nearly a decade for a 25-2 record overall.

Luke Rockhold made it a day of upsets after wrested the middleweight crown from Chris Weidman with an equally impressive fourth round  knockout victory.
