Serena happy to be back with Philippine fans
MANILA, Philippines - After only one night and two matches, Serena Williams has rekindled her friendship with the Filipino sports fans in this year’s IPTL Manila leg.
The American superstar was on the floor Sunday evening, teaming up with Fil-American Treat Huey in mixed doubles and facing Ana Ivanovic in the women’s singles at the Mall of Asia Arena.
She split her assignments for the Philippine Mavericks, losing the doubles match and winning the singles. But it didn’t matter to her fans who kept shouting her name.
“I’m so glad to be here,” she said in two minutes with the press.
Williams was in Manila for last year’s IPTL but then she played for a different team. Yet, the fans came to see her play, torn between rooting for her or the home team.
This time, she’s at the helm of the Philippine Mavericks, currently on top of the leaderboard with two wins and a loss.
She’s here to win more matches, more hearts.
“That’s why I’m here again,” said Williams, scheduled to play Kurumi Nara of the Japan Warriors, and also in the mixed doubles with Milos Raonic last night.
Serena said she can’t forget the warm reception last year.
“I really had fun last year. I love the crowd here. I’m so excited playing for the Philippine Mavericks. It really feels good to be back here. I’m so glad,” she said.
During breaks Sunday evening, Williams played with the crowd, and danced to the music provided by IPTL’s resident DJ.
Shouts of “Go, Serena!” bounced off the walls of the MOA Arena.
“I had wonderful reception last year and this year even more. It felt really good,” she said.
Williams is falling in love with the Manila crowd.
They’re loving her back.
