Mavs' Serena confirmed for 2016 Australian Open
MANILA, Philippines — Looks like Serena Williams isn’t taking a break next year after all.
The Philippine Maverick won’t be taking time off from the game of tennis — despite previously hinting that she will — after tournament organizers announced Williams’ participation in 2016’s first Grand Slam tennis event.
The Sydney Morning Post earlier today reported that the multiple-Grand Slam winner is confirmed to see action in the Australian Open.
"It's hard to beat Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal from a marketing point of view," tournament director Craig Tiley was quoted in the report.
Canada’s favorite Eugenie Bouchard and US Open winner Juan Martin del Potro are also among the confirmed participants.
Williams, who breaks her post-US Open hiatus at the majors slated this January, will also play in the dynamic tournament International Premier Tennis League.
The IPTL kicks off Wednesday, December 2, in Japan. A second leg will be held at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
