Foton spikes for Liga title versus Petron

MANILA, Philippines - Foton guns for a sweep but Petron is out for a payback, ensuring a slam-bang Game Two of the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix Finals at the Cuneta Astrodome today.

The Tornadoes stunned the fancied Blazer Spikers with a come-from-behind 14-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-22 victory in the opener of their best-of-three series last week and are going all out to finish the job and cap an impressive campaign in the tournament.

“The job is not yet done. We’re not yet ready to relax,” said Foton coach Villet Ponce-de Leon. “We’re just one win away. If we need to double our effort in Game 2, we will gladly do it.”

On their way to the finals, the Tornadoes, boasting of three six-footers, also upended the top seeded Philips Gold Lady Slammers in the semis then surprised the Blaze Spikers with a strong fightback from a lopsided opening set loss in the title series’ opener.

“What we have is a magical season. We were down at the start, but we regrouped and overcame all the obstacles. We just have to keep on working because fairy tales do come true,” said Ponce-de Leon.

But expect Petron to rev up in their 4 p.m. game with the Blaze Spikers raring to re-impose their will and strength and use their experience to force a winner-take-all in the inter-club tourney presented by Asics and backed by Milo with Senoh, Mikasa and Mueller as technical partners and TV5 as official broadcaster.

Petron coach George Pascua said they will still employ the same game plan but stressed the need to be more focused on the task at hand.
