MANILA, Philippines – Jumbo Plastic routed Foton, 100-73, to secure the No. 2 spot and the twice-to-beat edge in the quarterfinal round of the PCBL Founders Cup at the JCSGO gym Thursday night.
Kama Motors, on the other hand, stayed in the fight for the quarters bonus by thwarting Cagayan Valley, 91-85, in the other game.
With the win, Kama Motors ended up tied with Euro-Med with a 5-5 record. The two teams dispute the No.4 spot and the twice-to-beat edge in the tournament backed by Accel, Aquabest, Spalding and Ambucore.
The playoff will be held Tuesday, also at the JCSGO Gym.
Handled by coach Aries Dimaunahan, Kama Motors trailed majority of the way but surged ahead in the clutch behind ex-pros Rudy Lingganay and Roider Cabrera and Paolo Pontejos.
The troika combined for their team’s last eight points.
A former swingman of GlobalPort in the PBA, Cabrera fired a triple that gave Kama Motors an 86-79 lead with 2:21 left. Pontejos added a bucket and Lingganay split his charities in the last 37 seconds to seal the victory.
The Linoleum Giants took the lead early on 11 straight points in a three-minute stretch to post a 27-8 bulge on a triple by ex-pro James Martinez. They were never seriously threatened from there.
Jeff Viernes led the way for Jumbo Plastic with 27 points while Martinez added 24 markers.
