John Hay 2 pts up in Fil-Am golf

BAGUIO, Philippines – Camp John Hay pooled a 106 to open a two-point lead over Manila Southwoods at the start of the Seniors Fil-Championship of the Fil-Am Golf Invitational at the short but tricky Baguio Country Club here yesterday.

Baguio City Mayor Mauricio Domogan and Rudy Lockey struggled to turn in identical 28s, equivalent to eight over par in stroke play, while Police Gen. (ret.) Clyde Cabreros added a 27 and Bong Mandapat and Jeong Sek Jun chipped in 23 each, one of which didn’t count in the five-to-play, four-to-count format event presented by San Miguel.

Manila Southwoods drew 29 points from Bong Sison and 26 each from Cipriano Abdon and Edmund Yee while Herminio Maravilla scored a 25 as the Carmona-based squad also assembled a 106 in the Modified PAL Stableford format.

But Southwoods was slapped a two-point penalty after fifth player Charlie Kim, whose 21 didn’t count, putted after a bogey on No. 2.

San Miguel-Northern Cement scored a 102 for third with former pro Eddie Bagtas pacing the team with 27 points capped by a 20-foot birdie on No. 18 with Fernando delos Reyes and Chito Laureta adding 26 and 25 points, respectively.

2013 champion Megafiber also shot a 102 for joint third with Mari Hechanova and Tony Olives firing 27 points apiece and Rene Unson backing them up with a 26 and either Albert Garcia or Bing Bunye’s 22 counting in the event which stakes two Toyota Vios for aces on Nos. 10 and 18 of the BCC and Camp John Hay, respectively.
