Cagayan rips Euro-Med five; Jumbo scores
MANILA, Philippines – Cagayan Valley rode on a big third quarter charge to overpower Euro-Med, 89-78, and notch its second straight win after back-to-back losses in the PCBL Founders Cup at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City recently.
CJ Isit presided over the Rising Suns’ run that saw them outscore Euro-Med, 19-5, in a five-minute stretch of the third to post a commanding 70-56 lead entering the fourth period.
Cagayan also used a swarming defense to break a number of Euro-Med offensives en route to victory in the tournament supported by Spalding, Ambucore, Accel and Aquabest.
Euro-Med’s top gun Bong Gallanza scored 11 points in the first half, but was held scoreless in the last 20 minutes by the tough-defending Rising Suns.
“He did score a lot in the first half but we made a conscious effort on stopping him in the second half,” said Cagayan Valley coach Ronnie Dojillo, whose team tied its victim at second in Group B.
Jumbo Plastic, meanwhile, continued its streak as it blasted hapless Supremo Lex, 91-69, in the other game to seize the Group A lead at 3-1.
Jeff Viernes and JR Taganas scored 16 points apiece for Jumbo Plastic, which also drew 15 markers from former pro James Martinez.
Supremo Lex, which was led by JP Belencion’s 14 points, fell to 0-4.
