Coric thwarted in Kremlin Cup; Monfils log Vienna win

MANILA, Philippines – Borna Coric of the Philippine Mavericks got the boot early at the Kremlin Cup in Moscow, Wednesday.

Coric, who is seeded sixth in the tournament, fell prey to unseeded local netter Evgeny Donskoy, 4-6, 4-6.

This is the first time the No. 39 Coric and Donskoy – who is 109 spots below the young Croat – met. 

The Maverick has lost two straight outings. His last tormentor before the Russian was former US Open champion Marin Cilic, who is set to play for the UAE Royals who are also due for the International Premier Tennis League in December.

Over at the Women's side, Czech Republic's Karolina Pliskova rebounded from a second set loss to defeat Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7). 

Meanwhile, another IPTL athlete in Gael Monfils opened his Vienna conquest by dispatching his foe in three sets.

The Frenchman, seeded sixth in the tournament, fashioned out a 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-4 victory over Brazilian Thomaz Belluci. 

Monfils will be suiting up for the Indian Aces alongside Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal; Pliskova, on the other hand, will see action with Men's No. 1 Novak Djokovic under the banner of the Singapore Slammers.

The IPTL will mount its second leg of its second season at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on December 6 though 8.
