Pagara rarin’ to make impressive US debut

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

CARSON, California – They’re not being advertised as “the next” Manny Pacquiao – not Albert Pagara, Mark Magsayo or Jason Pagara.

They’re not.

“There will never be another Manny Pacquiao. Not in the next five-hundred years. Manny Pacquiao is special,” said Michael Aldeguer.

But the president of ALA Promotions is confident that his boxers are here to entertain and show what they’re capable of inside the ring.

The records would show.

Albert, 21 years old and undefeated in 24 fights, takes on William Gonzalez of Nicaragua at the StubHub Center here Saturday evening.

He puts his WBO Intercontinental junior featherweight title on the line, and hoping to put himself in a position for a crack at the world title.

Albert is not in a hurry, saying he’d rather take it one fight at a time until the big break comes along.

“Hindi naman ako nagmamadali (Am not in a hurry),” he said. “Dapat pag world title na ready na talaga ako (I should be ready when the title fight comes along).”

His older brother, Jason, 23, squares off with another boxer from Nicaragua –  Santos Benavides –  in a light-welterweight contest.

Jason is a veteran with 36 wins and two losses and 22 knockouts. He vowed to end the fight in a flurry.

Magsayo, on one hand, meets Mexico’s Yardley Suarez, with the IBT Youth featherweight championship at stake.

Magsayo is undefeated in 11 fights, with nine knockouts. He’s a joy to watch inside the ring, and even American trainer Freddie Roach has taken notice of him.

“These boys are good,” said Roach of the ALA fighters.

“But he’s the one with the greater potential,” he said of Magsayo.

Another Filipino boxer from San Francisco –  Bruno Escalante – will spice up the evening when he tests Nestor Ramos of Mexico.
