RTU, SBC tossers arrange title rematch

MANILA, Philippines - Rizal Technological University and San Beda Alabang disposed of their respective semifinal rivals to arrange a title rematch for the seniors volleyball crown in the 46th WNCAA at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum over the weekend.

RTU outlasted host Philippine Women’s University, 25-14, 25-22, 23-25, 25-18, to chalk up its eighth straight win while SBCA dominated Centro Escolar University, 26-24, 25-19, 25-15.

Game 1 of the best-of-three finals is set Sunday with RTU eyeing back-to-back championship.

Chiang Kai Shek, meanwhile, completed a 6-0 sweep of Junior B after stopping De La Salle Zobel, 21-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-23. DLSZ will get the No. 2 seeding in the quarterfinals.

In basketball, defending senior champion CEU trounced University of Asia & the Pacific, 82-20, for a 7-0 sweep of the elimination at the St. Scholastica gym. CEU earned a twice-to-beat edge in the semis against No. 4 SBCA set this Saturday.

No. 2 RTU and third-ranked PWU dispute the other finals berth.

DLSZ will seek a fifth straight midgets crown against St. Paul College Pasig with the finals opener also set this Sunday.  

DLSZ likewise swept all its six elims matches in the junior futsal event of the league supported by Gosen, Mikasa, Molten, Goody, Converse, Colgate, Sonak Trading, MJC Printing Press and media partners The Philippine STAR, Inquirer, Bulletin, Sports5, Magic 89.9 and Chalk Magazine. It will take on SPCP in the semifinals.  Miriam College and Assumption will contest the other finals berth.

Last year’s senior futsal champion CEU is out of the running, leaving RTU-Assumption and PWU-UA&P to dispute the finals slots also on Sunday at the UA&P gym.
