MANILA, Philippies – Philippine Maverick and hometown tennis hero Treat Huey weathered a tough side but emerged victorious in the opening round of men's doubles action at the St. Petersburg Open in Russia.
Huey, reinforced by Finnish netter Henri Kontinen met heavy resistance by a Czech-Kazakh duo of Frantisek Cermak and Mikhail Kukushkin, 7-6(2), 7-6(2).
Huey and Kontinen only converted 68 percent of their first serves but was able to restrict their errors in the double faults column, where their foes committed four, according to online tennis stats hub tennislive.net.
The Filipino-Finnish duo finished with seven aces to wear out the Cermak-Kukushkin pair.
Huey, now 30 years old, is currently ranked at 42 in the ATP doubles ladder. His partner Kontinen, is pencilled at 35.
Huey, who will play alongside top-tier tennis names -- like Serena Williams and Milos Raonic to name some -- will see action under the banner of Philippine Mavericks this December for the International Premier Tennis League.
Huey's last doubles exploit was during the US Open in New York where he got the boot in the hands of Leonard Mayer and Joao Sousa. He was alongside Brit Colin Fleming.
