MANILA, Philippines - Dennis Orcollo took a stinging 1-11 blowout to quarterfinal rival Shane Van Boening as the last Filipino bet bombed out of contention in the WPA World 9-ball Championship at Al Arabi Sports Club in Doha, Qatar Thursday night.
Orcollo couldn’t get going against the rampaging Van Boening, who kept breaking and running out en route to posting the unlikely lopsided win.
Van Boening will face Taiwanese Ko Pin Chung in Friday’s semis while Ko’s elder brother Ko Pin Yi takes on Chinese Wu Jia Qing in the other Last-4 duel.
It was a bitter ending for the pool ace from Surigao, who romped off with impressive victories since the group stages. Orcollo nipped Spaniard Francisco Diaz Pizarro, 9-4, and Bangaldeshi Hosain Sayeem, 9-6, in Group 13 to easily advance to knockout rounds, where he crushed Qatari Mishel Turkey, 11-1, American Hunter Lombardo, 11-7, and British Darren Appleton, 11-2, one after the other.
Orcollo’s exit completed the wipe-out of 11 Pinoys in the prestigious tourney.
Veteran Warren Kiamco reached the Round-of-16 after scoring an 11-7 win over Venezuelan Jalal Yousef but got stopped on his tracks by Ko Pin Yi, 9-11.
World No. 4 Carlo Biado, Oliver Medenilla and Jeffrey Ignacio were shown the door in the Last-32.
Biado fell to Ko Pin Yi in a surprisingly one-sided affair, 4-11, while Medenilla dropped an 8-11 setback to Taiwanese Chang Yu Lung, and Ignacio took a 7-11 loss to reigning world junior champion Aloissius Yapp of Singapore.
Raymund Faraon and Lee Vann Corteza made it to the Round-of-64 but lost to compatriots Kiamco and Biado, respectively, in a pair of all-Pinoy showdowns. Antonio Gabica and Johann Chua likewise bowed out in the Last-64 stage, losing to Russian Ruslan Chinakhov, 5-11, and Japanese Yukio Akagariyama, 5-11, respectively.
Two Phl bets – Francisco Felicilda and Qatar-based Amir Rota – failed to get past the group play.
