Gilas' Romeo listed day-to-day in Jones Cup

MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas’ young shooting guard Terrence Romeo has been listed as day-to-day after hurting his left ankle during the national squad’s 74-65 loss at the hands of mighty Iran in the William Jones Cup on Thursday in Taipei.

The 5-foot-11 Romeo twisted his ankle during the dying seconds of the third canto. He was seen limping as he returned to the bench.

The GlobalPort gunner was inserted back to the game late in the game, misfiring his lone three-point attempt as Gilas dropped to 3-2, practically kissing its title hopes goodbye.

“He (Romeo) will be day-to-day because it’s an ankle sprain,” Gilas physical therapist Dexter Aseron told Philstar.com after the game.

“It’s (left ankle) painful now so we will see tomorrow.”

Romeo was held down to just eight points, the first time he failed to score in double figures in the annual tournament held in honor of Renato William Jones, one of the founders of FIBA.

Also relegated to the injured list is comebacking Gilas guard Jimmy Alapag, who re-injured his quad during Gilas’ 70-82 loss to arch-nemesis South Korea.

The Filipinos will try to get back on the winning track on Friday when they collide with the Wellington Saints from New Zealand at 1 p.m. on Friday.

The Saints are currently at the bottom half of the standings with their 1-3 win-loss record.

Gilas will be facing the same Wellington Saints side late next week in the first MVP Cup in Manila.
