Meralco plans retirement ceremony for Ildefonso

Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines -- Plans are afoot for Meralco officials to come up with a fitting sendoff for two-time PBA Most Valuable Player Danny Ildefonso, who declared that he’s officially retiring after 17 seasons.

Ildefonso told Philstar.com over two weeks ago that he’s calling it quits upon learning from Bolts coach Norman Black that the team is set to rebuild its roster.

“For someone of Danny Ildefonso’s stature, maybe we could come up with a co-production with the PBA,” Meralco team manager Paolo Trillo told Philstar.com.

Trillo said once they settle down from the busy offseason, they will try to take a look at Ildefonso’s possible graceful exit to the PBA.

The amiable Meralco official said the Bolts are grateful for the contributions of Ildefonso, who have no doubt, left an indelible mark in the pro league with his professionalism and leadership by example.

The 6-foot-5 Ildefonso, the top overall pick in the 1998 PBA Rookie Draft, played for the Bolts in his last two seasons, where he served as one of the team’s veteran backup big men.

He averaged 2.5 points, 1.6 rebounds and 0.7 assist in 55 games.

During his prime, Ildefonso served as face of the  San Miguel Beer franchise, winning eight league championships, two MVP trophies, five Best Player awards and three Finals MVP trophies and was named to the Mythical First Team two times.

He was credited for the development of San Miguel star center June Mar Fajardo, who, just this past season, won two league championships and two MVP trophies.
