The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Charles Sinining and Manilyn Cabungcag of Escalante, Negros Occidental stamped their class in chess while Carl Baran and Valerie Desoyo dominated tennis as they joined the roster of winners in the  2015 Batang Pinoy Visayas leg which ended yesterday in Romblon.

Sinining took the blitz, rapid and standard chess gold with similar seven points while Cabungcag ruled girls’ blitz, standard and rapid events to cap Escalante’s domination of the sport at the Romblon Municipal session hall.

Baran beat Al Francis Andrade of Aklan, 8-6, and fellow La Carlota native Desoyo defeated Kianna de Asis, 8-5, in tennis singles at the Governor’ residence tennis court.

Banago, a barangay from Bacolod, won the girls’ softball gold with a 3-0 victory over Iloilo at the Romblon National High School diamond.

Marc Bryan Villarojo of Tagbilaran took the silver in blitz and standard while Michael Torion of Maasin City finished second in rapid chess of the weeklong grassroots competition for athletes 15-years old and below from Western, Central and Eastern Visayas.

Mayor Gerald Montojo and POC executive Romeo Magat graced the awards rites at the governor’s residence tennis court.

Meanwhile, the Mindanao leg will be held Oct. 23-28 in Koronadal City, South Cotabato with 14 sports, including medal-rich athletics and swimming, on tap.

Qualifiers in the three-leg grassroots sports competition supported by Local Government Units and Philippine Olympic Committee will compete in the national finals slated in November at the Abellana Sports Complex in Cebu.
