Bacolod sizzles in Batang Pinoy leg

MANILA, Philippines - Bacolod dominated its rivals in karatedo, racking up a 27-gold, 11-silver, and four-bronze medal haul while humbling host Romblon in softball in the Batang Pinoy Visayas leg in Romblon yesterday.

Reivax Josh Condada came through with a three-gold medal splurge in the minus 35 kg. intermediate, minus 35kg advance and minus 35 kg. kumite as Bacolod routed the field with Negros Occidental finishing with five golds and Iloilo and Bohol ending up with three golds apiece.

Other Bacolod winners were Kyle Francis Armada in the plus 35 kg. kata, John Lander Corpuz in the minus 53, Don Jerry Alisoso in the minus 25 kg. kumite and Charles Angelo Rodriguez in the minus 40kg. kumite.

Leyte Sports Academy and Iloilo, meanwhile, shared top honors in athletics while Negros Occidental ruled table tennis and La Carlota-Cebu City stamped its class in lawn tennis.

Bacolod, represented by Barangay Panago, crushed host Romblon, 10-0, in girls’ softball after dropping a 0-1 decision to Iloilo.

Leyte won the 4x100m girls and 4x100m boys to cap the Eastern Visayas runners’ romp at the Romblon National High School track and field stadium.

The competition, organized by the Philippine Sports Commission in partnership with the local government, is aimed at tapping young talents in the countryside and training them to become members of the national pool.

Justine Mae Catindoy, who won the bronze in girls’ long jump, anchored her team to victory in the 4x100m relay in 55.3 seconds as Leyte beat Iloilo, which settled for the silver in 58 seconds.

The quartet of Niño Azores, Aldrin Hermosilla, Jandro Pepito and Noel Tan Jr. also took the gold for Leyte in 50.0 seconds, edging Iloilo, which took the silver in 50.4 seconds.

Alaine Arguelles, Alyssa Toleco and Mica Tanate, meanwhile, made a 1-2-3 finish for Negros Occidental in table tennis.

The duo of Valerie Jane Desoyo and Shyryn Gypril Salazar also powered La Carlorta to victory against Milliam sisters, Alexa and Jewel, 2-1, in tennis doubles girls with Cebu copping the girls team event.

Iloilo bet Angelo Gepilaga ruled the boys’ 100m hurdles in 17.5 seconds, nipping silver medalist Christian de los Santos of Maasin, who timed 18.8 seconds for silver while teammate Krylle Cabaysa took the bronze in 18.9 seconds.
