MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Maverick Borna Coric is through to the third round in the Winston Salem Open.
Coric fought back after dropping the first set, eventually winning two sets en route to pocketing the whole match, 4-6,6-2, 6-2, at the expense of Santiago Giraldo.
Coric, one of the three teenagers in the Winston-Salem Open, has taken one of the final 16 slots in the US Open series tournament.
The young Croat, currently ranked 35 in the world, beat Giraldo, who was once the World No. 28.
Giraldo is nine years Coric's senior. He has been a pro since 2004.
The win gave the Maverick a third round access, something he hasn't experienced since losing to American Jack Sock in the recent French Open.
Coric is set to play alongside French hotshot Richard Gasquet, German power hitter Sabine Lisicki and World No. 1 Serena Williams in the International Premier Tennis League set here this December.
