MANILA, Philippines - Princess Superal lost steam in a grueling final day charge and settled for eighth with a closing one-over 75 in the Ladies British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship won by India’s Aditi Ashok at the Moortown Golf Club in Alwoodley, England Friday.
Superal moved up joint fifth with a gutsy one-under 73 in morning play of the 36-hole final round but went on a roller-coaster ride in windy afternoon, marred by bogeys in the last two holes for a 37-38.
Her final day haul of 148 gave the ICTSI-The Country Club team spearhead a 72-hole total of 297, which included 73 and 76, 12 strokes off Ashok, who built a four-shot lead with a solid 70 in the third round en route to a five-shot win over Olivia Mehaffey with a 285 after a 71.
Mehaffey closed out with back-to-back 71s to finish second at 290 while Linn Andersson placed third at 294 after a 75.
Superal charged back with an 18-foot birdie on No. 12 and a three-footer on the 16th to save a 73 in morning play but went up-and-down in her second stint at the front nine in the day, trading birdies and bogeys in a seven-hole stretch from No. 2.
She came out of the turn with a one-under 37 but bogeyed No. 12 after an errant approach shot, birdied the next from 30 feet out only to drop another shot on No. 14 after a poor drive. She tapped in for birdie on No. 16 but missed the last two greens and wound up with bogeys for a 75.
Over in California, Pauline del Rosario and Bernice Olivarez-Ilas kept Team ICTSI-TCC’s win run going in the weekly 18- and 36-hole tournaments in the US juniors circuit, ruling the Willowick Summer Championship at the par-71 Willowick Golf Club over the weekend.
Del Rosarios shot a five-under 66 to foil teammate Sofia Chabon by two with Sam Martirez finishing third.
