MANILA, Philippines - Southeast Asian Games gold medal winners Nikko Huelgas and Claire Adorna headline over 300 triathletes vying in the Philippine National Triathlon Trials firing off tomorrow at 6 a.m. in Iloilo City.
The event also stakes berths in the national pool for the top finishers among the local triathletes and serves as a promotion for the Iloilo River clean-up project.
Kim Mangrobang, a silver medalist in the Singapore SEAG, joins Huelgas and Adorna in the Standard Distance (1.5K swim-40K bike-10K run) and Sprint Distance (750M swim-20K bike-6K run) courses that will start by the beach at Joe II Garden followed by cycling around the city’s roads and running along Benigno Aquino avenue before finishing at Esplanade.
Aside from the P40,000 in total cash prizes, also at stake in the event co-organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (TRAP) and the City Government of Iloilo headed by Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and supported by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Office of the Senate President Franklin Drilon are opportunities for Visayan triathletes to qualify for the Philippine team’s developmental pool. The top three winners in the age-group as well as team relay categories will be awarded medals and gift packs.
