Altas, Eagles pace Martin Cup caging

MANILA, Philippines - University of Perpetual Help and Ateneo scored victories in contrasting fashions to seize control in their respective groups in the 13th Fr. Martin Cup Division 2 basketball tournament at the Arellano gym in Legarda last weekend.

The Altas stopped the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers, 85-82, in overtime in Group B, while the Blue Eagles trounced the Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 87-60, in Group A.  

Chester Saldua scored on a putback at the buzzer to force overtime at 78 then JC Angeles canned in two free throws with 21.4 seconds left in extra play to seal the Altas’ second straight win.

Cole Micek fired a game-high 21 points for the Blue Eagles, who also posted their second win in row.

Daryl Singontiko shot 27 points for the Altas against the Growling Tigers and drilled in 19 markers in their 80-62 victory over the Letran Knights the other weekend.
