Aces' Monfils accused of tanking in Cincinnati loss

Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines – Former French No. 1 and World No. 7 Gael Monfils have triggered tanking accusations during a losing stand in the Western & Southern (W&S) Open in Cincinnati.

Monfils' 4-6, 5-7 loss to Poland's Jerzy Janowicz left a bad taste on former US Open queen Tracy Austin, who was rendering W&S commentator duties for an American broadcasting company.

"To not give 100 percent and be so blatant about it, I think it's disrespectful," she said of the 14th seed's effort, as reported by Yahoo! Sports.

In a separate story, IndianExpress.com said indicated that "Monfils served so quickly in the second set that ball boys barely had time to get into position."

Monfils is expected to lead the Indian Aces alongside Rafael Nadal in the International Premier Tennis League.

“With Gael, it’s so difficult to watch because you know his upside ceiling could be so big but he just goes away and doesn’t even try,” Austin was quoted saying, the report added.

Monfils is a returning talent for the Aces for the IPTL's second season this December.
