MANILA, Philippines – Richard Gasquet has pulled out of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada.
The Philippine Maverick, who is No. 13 in the world rankings, withdrew from the Canadian Open due to an illness. He was replaced by fellow Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, an official dispatch from the tournament said.
Mahut bowed out of contention after two sets, 1-6, 5-7, at the hands of another compatriot, Jeremy Chardy.
Gasquet, who has been priming up for the US Open, was trying to recover from a loss dealt by American Jack Sock during the Citi Open in Washington.
The Maverick's most recent stellar play was against World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, whom he played in the Wimbledon last July. He lasted for three sets in that semis match.
Gasquet is one of the many high-profile names slated for a Philippine visit this December for the International Premier Tennis League.
He plays side-by-side with Serena Williams and Sabine Lisicki in the dynamic tournament.
