Serena Williams starts Canadian Open bid vs Pennetta

MANILA, Philippines – Philippine Maverick Serena Williams is gunning for a twin kill Wednesday, August 12, in the Rogers Cup in Canada.
The World No. 1 will try to open her Canadian Open on a winning note and continue her mastery of her foe Flavia Pennetta.
Both 33 years old, Williams and Pennetta have been going at it for six times now, with the Maverick winning all meetings. They face off three in the morning Wednesday.
The last time the American and the Italian met was in the US Open Quarterfinals in 2014, where Williams mounted a brilliant 6-3, 6-2 dismantling of Pennetta.
Pennetta is ranked 26th in the world rankings. She was able reach No. 1 in the women's doubles ladder in 2011. She even peaked at No. 12 in the singles column last May.
The Rogers Cup or the Canadian Open, alternately played in Montreal and Toronto, is a hard-court event considered by many tennis enthusiast as a drum-up event for the Grand Slam event US Open.
Williams takes the spotlight on the road to this year's final Grand Slam event as she is on the cusp of winning it all four in the same year.
She is expected to cap off that possible historic feat with a stint for the Philippine Mavericks in the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) in December.
The second leg of the IPTL will be held here in the country at the Mall of Asia Arena.
