MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines Phoenix Premium 98 Amateur Open presented by Mechatrends gets going Wednesday at the Cebu Country Club with the top players and rising stars in the region clashing for top honors in various divisions.
More than 100 players are confirmed to play in the first stop of the three-leg series put up by the Phoenix Philippines Foundation to help promote the sport and at the same time discover fresh talents to boost the country’s national pool of talents.
“We are excited to get this series under way. We are hopeful on the huge turnout in all three legs,” said lawyer Raymond Zorrilla, Phoenix vice president for external affairs.
Sponsored by Magsaysay Transport and Logistics and BDO Unibank, the Premium 98 Am Open is part of the foundation’s long-term program for the sport, which Phoenix believes would bring glory to the Philippines in the near future.
“We have to prepare for the future now that golf is recognized again in the 2016 Olympics. It would be best to plan ahead to nurture, develop, and continuously train Filipinos with potential to become champion golfers,” Zorrilla added.
Pioneer Insurance, Foton, Tata Motors, GPS Tracker and Miura are hole-in-one sponsors while Landbank, Mercedes-Benz, Union Bank, Trans Overseas Industrial Corp. and Green Future Innovations are the backers of the circuit put up by Phoenix Petroleum.
