Knights, Chiefs pull thru in Martin Cup
MANILA, Philippines - Letran outlasted UST in overtime, 70-67, while Arellano U repulsed AMA Computer U, 79-76, in the 13th Fr. Martin Cup Division 2 basketball tournament at the Arellano gym in Legarda, Manila last weekend.
Renato Ular scored 15 points while Eugene Cujos and Morten Hansen added 15 markers each for the Knights, who pulled away at 70-61 in the extra period before the Tigers scored the last six points in the last two minutes.
Ely Leguin’s split charity with 10.2 seconds capped a 6-0 windup by UST, which forced overtime at 58. But the Knights imposed their will in the early going of extension to build enough cushion that foiled the Tigers’ fightback anchored on 6-5 Christian Kakonda’s jumper.
Letran thus evened its card at 1-1 in Group B in seniors play.
Marvin Taywan hit 16 points while Archie Concepcion made 14 markers for the Chiefs, who notched their first win in Group A.
In juniors division, Xavier School and AMA beat their rivals to lead their respective brackets with 2-0 marks.
Tyler Tio banged in 30 points for the Golden Stallions, who slammed the San Benildo side, 71-57, while the Junior Titans drew 37 points from Gel Macaranas in defeating the Lyceum Junior Pirates, 93-80.
