Malig gains silver in Asian School Tenpin

Ivan Malig gave the Philippines its second medal in the 16th Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championships as he captured the silver in the meet’s culminating masters event Friday in Hong Kong.

Malig bowed to Singapore’s Kuek Qi En in the two-game title showdown, 183-216, to settle for runner-up honors in the boys’ division.

With this, the Philippine contingent finished with two silvers for fifth overall among 13 nations. Malig was also part of the crew that placed second in the boys’ team of four event the other day.

Malig ran seventh at the end of the first block with  1775 pinfalls. He then rolled 1818 in the second block to vault to third and qualify for the stepladder finals, where he nipped third seed Jassem Al Muraikhi of Qatar A, 216-183.

Top seed Kuek, however stopped the Pinoy on his tracks. 

The Singaporean knocked down eight straight strikes en route to a 268-185 lead against Malig, who had splits in the first and four frames. Kuek cruised to a 203-183  in the second game to wrap up Singapore’s only gold.

Korea A’s Kim Dong Yo tripped Malaysia’s Nora Lyana Natasia in two games, 411-386, to win the tiara in girls’ masters, where Filipina Bea Hernandez wound up 14th after the second block with 3137 and missed the stepladder.

Korea carted five golds and two bronzes to finish No. 1 followed by Japan (2-2-2), Singapore A (1-0-1), Malaysia (4-1), Phl (0-2-0) and Qatar A (0-0-3).
