Bowlers struggle in Asian school tilt

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Filipino bowlers continued to struggle in the face of the Koreans’ onslaught, finishing way outside the medal podium in yesterday’s doubles competitions of the 16th Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championship in Hong Kong.

Phl Team A-1 Bea Hernandez and Angela Lazo wound up 12th overall in the girls’ hostilities while Phl A-2’s Louis Cantorna and GJ Buyco emerged as the best-performers among the Pinoys in the boys’ side at 14th spot.

Hernandez, fifth-placer in the singles, rolled a 1252 but partner Layo managed only 996 as the duo tallied 2248 – well off the winning 2557 submitted by Korea B-1’s Kim Jin Ju (1404) and Kim Hyo Min (1153).

Just seven pins behind, Malaysia 2 took the silver with Faten Najihah and Nur Amirah Auni Azman carding 1208 and 1342, respectively. Singapore A-1’s Charmaine Chang (1235) and Amanda Lee (1225) won the bronze with 2460.

Cantorna (1069) and Buyco (1320) combined for 2389 in the event ruled by Korea A-2’s Seo Hyo Dong (1349) and Kill Jun Seong (1421) with 2770.

Finishing at second and third, respectively, were Japan 1’s Shinpei Sakahara (1316) and Riku Masui (1354) with 2670 and Qatar A-1’s Hazeem (1385) and Jassem Al Muraikhi (1240) with 2625.

Korea had swept the first four golds staked in the tourney.

Hernandez, who scored the tourney’s first 300 in the singles, stayed in contention for the girls’ all-events, logging 3102 after 15 games for seventh place. Jin Ju led the way with 3389.
