Philippines’s Ferreras, Sy finish 2nd in Nicklaus T-of-C

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines’ Ivan Ferreras and Sammy Sy settled for runner-up honors with a net 71 as South Korea charged back in the last nine holes with three birdies to fire a 70 and capture the ninth Jack Nicklaus International Invitational (JNII) at the Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio recently.

Cheon Il Song and Byung Muk Yoon gunned down three birdies at the backside to get past the Filipino duo and snare the crown in the annual event dubbed as the Tournament of Champions which gathered the winners of all JNII national tournaments held over the last 12 months in various countries around the world.

The Philippines and Korea joined three others in the 18-hole international final sponsored by the Jack Nicklaus Apparel.

Indonesia’s Andrey Atmadji and Sugianto tied Andrew Morgan and Santos Maharaj of South Africa for third with net 72s.

The JNII is a two-player team competition for recreational players of all skill levels who get to experience competitive golf in a relaxed, social atmosphere that promotes camaraderie and interest in the game.

“It was an experience like no other,” said Ferreras, who relished meeting new friends with as much passion for the sport.

For Sy, what makes the tournament doubly rewarding is the rare chance of meeting the golfing legend.

“It was all about meeting Jack and getting to see the pros play golf in the memorial tournament. It will be a lasting memory,” said Sy, who with Ferreras vowed to prepare early for another crack at the JNII spot next year.

Meanwhile, the chase for berths in the next JNII begins May 30-June 2, 2016 around the world. For details, visit www.jniigolf.com and follow the action on social media facebook.com/JNIIGolf and Twitter (@jniigolf).
