Atlas cites speed, volume punching, footwork as keys for Pacquiao

Boxing trainer Teddy Atlas is giving Manny Pacquiao a good shot to defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr. in their May 2 showdown.

MANILA, Philippines – Renowned boxing trainer Teddy Atlas likes Manny Pacquiao’s chances to accomplish something that has never been done before – beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a professional bout.

In a report by Victor Salazar of Tha Boxing Voice, the 58-year-old trainer picked several of Pacquiao’s advantages which he claimed will be the Filipino icon’s keys to victory on May 2 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“Three reasons [why Pacquiao will beat Mayweather], he’s got quick hands, he can match Floyd’s hand speed. He puts punches in volumes,” explained Atlas, who also works as a boxing commentator.

The cornerman – who was best known for guiding Michael Moorer to the heavyweight championship in 1994 – also pointed out that compared to the calculating Mayweather, Pacquiao throws punches in volumes.

“The perception of Floyd is that he’s a combination puncher. He’s a 1-2 guy. He picks his spot and never takes chances. Pacquiao, he puts punches together in volume,” he added.

Pacquiao has narrowed the odds of him handing Mayweather his first loss. From a 3-1 underdog, the Filipino icon is now a less than 2-1 underdog to emerge victorious against the undefeated American.

Some boxing observers believe Pacquiao has the tools to pull off what 47 other fighters before him tried and failed to do. Count Atlas among them.

Pacquiao’s footwork, according to Atlas, is another asset that he can use against Mayweather.

“His [Pacquiao’s] foot speed is excellent. You got to have quick feet to match Floyd. Pacquiao has it, and he has a good shot,” he continued.

Pacquiao’s chief trainer Freddie Roach had insisted that the 38-year-old Mayweather no longer possesses the same legs that have helped him become the elusive boxer that he is. He claims his ward his fresher than Mayweather.
