Arum’s prediction: Pacquiao will win ‘round after round’

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Bob Arum is on the same page with Freddie Roach that Manny Pacquiao will be the dominant fighter on May 2 in Las Vegas.

Roach said a while back that Pacquiao is going to win every round against Mayweather, a 38-year-old boxer who’s running out of legs.

That means Pacquiao may or will find no need to score a knockout in order to win the fight that matters most.

“Exactly,” said Arum on the phone the other day.

The 83-year-old boxing promoter is back in Las Vegas, manning the Top Rank office after visiting Pacquiao in Los Angeles.

Arum spent some time at the Wild Card Gym, catching Pacquiao in training for the highly anticipated fight.

Arum liked what he saw he must be having dreams of Pacquiao throwing balls of fire on Mayweather inside the ring.

“Manny will heave fire on Mayweather round after round after round,” he told The STAR.

Pacquiao, he added, will dominate the fight and yes, there’s actually no need to knock Maywearther out.

The Filipino champion can be as impressive winning on points.

“But if Manny knocks him out, fine. If not, then he’ll get a clear-cut decision,” Arum added.

Pacquiao’s training has gone a couple notches higher over the past week.

Sparring had gone up to eight rounds and soon it will hit 10 and 12. Everything and everybody’s in high gear now.

Pacquiao, according to his strength coach Justin Fortune, is done with the rigorous uphill runs on Griffith Park.

The stamina is already there, Fortune said, and Pacquiao has to stop running like he’s out to conquer the Boston Marathon.

Training outside the gym has shifted to improving mobility with the legs because Roach said that will be the key.

Roach said Mayweather’s legs “are shot.”

If Pacquiao can move the way he moved against Oscar dela Hoya, then he can dominate the fight.

All he needs to do is pull the trigger.
