MANILA, Philippines - University of the East will no longer have star guard Roi Sumang as well as ace foreign player Charles Mammie when the Warriors launch their campaign in UAAP men’s basketball next season.
“Roi will skip his final year (of eligibility with UE) and will just play for the D-League and apply for the PBA draft,” UE coach Derrick Pumaren confirmed yesterday.
Sumang, who averaged 13 points, 3.92 assists and 1.08 steal in 13 games last season, is currently playing for Tanduay Lite in the PBA D-League.
Sierra Leone import Mammie won’t be around for the next competition, too. Pumaren said after obtaining Mammie’s high school records, it was discovered that the 6-foot-8 behemoth has already maxed out the league’s seven-year window.
The Warriors’ other foreign cager, Mustafa Arafat, is also out after school officials axed him for playing in a pocket tournament without permission.
Guard Dan Alberto, who had some shining moments in Season 77 where the Warriors narrowly missed the Final Four, is expected to take over the slot of Sumang.
UE will also bank on new recruits Fran Yu and Shannon Gagante from Chiang Kai Shek College and Ilonggo youngster Ralph Penuela.
