WATCH: UFC stars root for Pacquiao vs Mayweather

Alder Almo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -- Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) stars Frankie Edgar and Urijah Faber are as excited as any fight fan on the Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather, Jr. showdown on May 2 (May 3 Manila time).

Edgar played safe while Faber was vocal to say he's rooting for Pacquiao when Philstar.com caught up with them during the official press conference of their own duel in the first the first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Fight Night in Manila last Tuesday at Solaire Casino in Pasay City.

"I'm just glad it's happening. I think everyone wishes it was, maybe, four or five years ago. But better late than never," said Edgar of the super fight that was five years in the making.

"I think the fans are in for a treat. It's the kind of fight of two contradicting styles -- Floyd is [very] defensive, both are very fast. But Floyd is super aggressive. He's got the best footwork in the game," Edgar added.

Meanwhile, Faber, got the crowd roaring when he said he's a big fan of the Filipino boxing champion.

"I've been a big fan of Manny Pacquiao. I've actually met him. He's such a nice guy. I'm hoping that he wins," Faber said.

"I think his best chance would be, of course, he never really is timid but if he goes out there to press his attack. Floyd does a good job of deflecting a lot of punches but the speed and power of Pacquiao will give him trouble. But again, the track record of Floyd is pretty impressive. So I would say Floyd is the favorite but I'm rooting for Pacquiao," Faber added.

Both UFC fighters went to Manila to promote the first every UFC fight card here that is slated on May 16, two weeks after the Pacquiao-Mayweather super showdown in Las Vegas.

Tickets to their own showdown at the Mall of Asia Arena, have been selling briskly since SM Tickets started selling them Friday.

Faber, who is considered as one of the most important fighters to establish the lighter weight classes in MMA, is hoping that Pacquiao could pull the upset.

"I would love to get him the W but it's scary though because Floyd is defensively-sound and he's the bigger guy," Faber said.

The 'California Kid' said Pacquiao was the favorite before he was knocked out cold by his Mexican rival Juan Manuel Marquez.

"A couple of years ago, I was leaning for Pacquiao because of his punching power and aggressiveness but now Floyd will play safe and will go for a decision but I hope not," Faber said.
