Justin Melton expects tough aerial battle in Slam Dunk contest

Alder Almo - The Philippine Star

PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan -- Judging from the seriousness of the participants, this year's Slam Dunk contest might top last year's edition where Justin Melton and Rey Guevarra ended up tied for the title in one of the most memorable duels in the history of the All Star side event.

Melton and Guevarra will be back to defend their title against Brgy. Ginebra's Japeth Aguilar, Talk n Text rookie Matt Ganuelas-Rosser and Barako Bull's JC Intal.

Despite the absence of Calvin Abueva, Gabe Norwood and Chris Ellis, who all backed out due to various reasons, Melton still believes the flight to a second straight title will be tough.

"After talking to a few contestants, it seems like everybody is somewhat prepared so I expect a nice show out there," said Melton but kept to his chest the repertoire he prepared for the contest.

The 5-foot-11 Melton, the smallest in the field and the only player below 6 feet, will be coming as a heavy favorite to repeat with Guevarra needing to spring surprise anew to contend this year.

But Intal is also a high-leaper and a former slam dunk champion back in college while Ganuelas-Rosser is the most athletic rookie this season. Aguilar, meanwhile, will try to rebound from his lackluster stint last year where he missed some of his dunks causing him to fall by the wayside.

The Slam Dunk competition will be one of the four side events Friday that will usher in the All Star weekend here which will culminate with the North vs South All Star Game on Sunday.
