Mayweather: It’s just another day

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Every inch of the way, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is better than Manny Pacquiao.

Well, that’s what the American, who has never tasted defeat inside the ring, thinks.

That’s what he’ll keep on saying, again and again.

“I mean, when you just look at the tale of the tape, I have a longer reach, I’m taller, I’m stronger, and I’m more accurate,” he said.

Mayweather spoke to www.fighthype.com, an outlet which he’s fully comfortable with, the day after he announced his May 2 fight with Pacquiao.

With a perfect 47-0 record, Mayweather also enjoys a longer reach (72 inches to 67) and at 5’8” is almost two inches taller.

On paper and in person, Mayweather is the bigger guy.

Mayweather is the pound-for-pound champion, a title which Pacquiao carried around, mostly while the former was enjoying retirement.

Of his 47 wins as a professional, 26 came by knockout.

Pacquiao at 36 is younger by two years but had seen more days, tougher days inside the boxing ring with 64 fights in 20 years as a pro.

The Filipino icon has 57 wins under his belt and eight world titles in as many weight classes. He has lost five times, twice in his last five fights.

In 2012, Pacquiao suffered a harrowing knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez. Many thought he was done. But he has won three in a row now.

Mayweather said Pacquiao cannot succeed where 47 others have failed.

Pacquiao, he said, will be victim No. 48.

“To me, it’s just another day. It’s just another fight,” said Mayweather, a 2 1/2-1 favorite in this contest offering the three welterweight titles.

Pacquiao, according to Mayweather, is not the same old Pacquiao.

“I think I seen a major change in Pacquiao,” he said.

That could be the reason why Mayweather waited this long to make the fight happen. He waited for that “major change.”

“I took my time, I made the right move, and I’m just ready to go out there and be exciting. Be smart and be exciting. I mean, he’s a fighter just like I’m a fighter, and he’s a guy that’s out there to win,” he said.

To Mayweather, being undefeated makes the big difference.

“The only thing I know is to win, so is losing in the back of his mind? Absolutely! Why? Because he probably lost 3 or 5 times before, so losing is in his mind.

“Losing is not in my mind because the only thing I know how to do is win,” added Mayweather.

But there’s no guarantee against a fighter like Pacquiao.

All good things come to an end.
