Faves breeze thru in ELO Cup netfest

MANILA, Philippines - Top seed Marcen Gonzales and No. 2 Emmanuel Fuellas came away with a pair of lopsided wins and eased through the quarterfinal round of the premier boys’ class in the Palawan Pawnshop-Palawan Express Pera Padala E.L.O. Cup regional age group tennis presented by Technifibre at the Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig City late Friday.

Gonzales primed up for the tougher phase with a 6-0, 6-0 romp over Brandon Gazmen while Fuellas dropped just two games to bundle out Kenneth Valdez, 6-0, 6-2, in the lower half of the draw in the 18-and-Under section of the event held in honor of Philta president and Parañaque Mayor Edwin Olivarez.

Third-ranked Julian Dayrit whipped Peter Coteron, 6-1, 6-1, while No. 4 Manuel Balce III subdued Renzo de Ocampo, 6-2, 6-3, to join other unfancied quarterfinalists Angelo Cerezo, Paolo So, Marraphael Teng and Jose San Buenaventura. Cerezo scored a walkover win over Edward Biag, So blanked Raphael Custodio, 6-0, 6-0; Teng toppled Matthew Tan, 6-2, 6-0; and San Buenaventura held off Stephen Lhuillier, 6-4, 6-3.

Top seed Cenon Gonzales Jr. and No. 2 Jerome Romualdez also stayed on collision course in the 16-U play with a pair of walkover wins with Balce also joining the Last 8 cast with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Lhuillier and Gabriel Tiamson foiling Coteron, 6-2, 6-4.
