It's Finally On: Mayweather announces May 2 fight vs Pacquiao

Alder Almo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -- The super fight the world has been waiting for in the last five, six years is finally happening.

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. used his Shots account on Friday (Saturday Manila time) to end all speculations and make what could be the richest fight in boxing history official.

Mayweather showed a photo of a contract both bearing his and Pacquiao's signatures. The negotiation has dragged on for months even if Pacquiao has already agreed to all Mayweather's demands, including getting the smaller piece of the pie, largely because of both fighters's TV network contracts.

Mayweather is under Showtime while Pacquiao is with rival HBO.

Showtime and HBO will team up for only the second time in history to broadcast the historic event that is locked to beat the all-time pay per view record of 2.4 million buys generated by the Mayweather-Oscar dela Hoya fight in 2007.  Both networks have already worked together before in the Lennox Lewis-Mike Tyson showdown in 2002.

Mayweather, who will turn 38 on Tuesday (Feb. 24), will stake his unbeaten (47-0, 26 KOs) against Pacquiao (57-5-2, 38 KOs) on May 2 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The much anticipated bout is expected to break all records in gate attendance and pay-per-view and ultimately, will finally end the debate on who is the best boxer of this generation.

The other details of the fight contract will be announced soon.  It was earlier reported that there is a rematch clause and will happen before the year ends.

Moments after Mayweather announced the fight, Pacquiao posted two photos on his Instagram showing the fight contract bearing his signature long before the undefeated American signed it.
