Young Gabe cops PSA youth award
MANILA, Philippines - Seaoil karter Gabriel Tayao Cabrera added the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) award to his growing trophy collection as he copped the Tony Siddayao Youth Award during the PSA Annual Awards Night at 1Esplanade recently.
The 15-year-old Makati Hope Christian School student stood out last year with a string of victories, including an overall championship win in the Asian Karting Open. He also became the first junior karter in history to achieve a perfect record when he topped the time trials and finals over novice, junior, senior and veteran drivers in the entire ROK series.
“I’m really grateful and humbled to be recognized as one of the country’s most outstanding athletes,” said Cabrera, whose local and overseas campaigns are backed up by DC, Gold’s Gym, R’s Design, Point Zero Project and Media Magic.
Cabrera is also set to rake in more honors next month in the Golden Wheel Awards, the country’s “Oscar” of Motorsports with the following titles – Asian Karting Open Junior Series Champion, Junior Karter of the Year, ROK Overall Series Champion, ROK Junior Series Champion and KF3 Series first runner-up.
The award is given in honor of Tony Siddayao, the late former sports editor of the Manila Standard and considered the dean of Philippine sportswriting.
