MANILA, Philippines - National U dispatched Far Eastern U in straight sets, 25-21, 25-20, 25-23, to seize solo third in the UAAP Season 77 women’s volleyball tourney yesterday at the Filoil Arena.

Jaja Santiago (18), Rizza Mandapat (13), Myla Pablo (10) and Jorelle Singh (10) delivered double-digit outputs to lead the Lady Bulldogs to their sixth win in 12 outings.

University of the Philippines earlier eked out a come-from-behind 11-25, 25-20, 16-20, 25-18, 15-11 victory over skidding Santo Tomas to keep its own semis hopes alive.

The Lady Maroons banked on Nicole Tiamzon and service specialist Hanna Mangulabanan to win the decider and improve to 5-7 for fifth place behind semis-bound Ateneo (12-0) and La Salle (11-1), NU (6-6) and idle Adamson (5-6).

UP’s victory sent the Tigresses to the brink of elimination at 5-8 while allowing NU to move in front of a heavy five-team pack disputing the two remaining semis berths.

“Napaganda siguro ang pagkakapanalo ng UP para sa amin pero hindi kami aasa doon. Basta mag-No. 3 kami, which is attainable naman (We benefited from UP’s win earlier but we shouldn’t really be relying on the other teams to meet our goal of finishing at No. 3),” said NU coach Roger Gorayeb.

Only Toni Rose Basas finished in twin digits with 15 hits for FEU, which dropped to 4-8.   – Olmin Leyba
