Soltones, Uy down MIT rivals

MANILA, Philippines - San Sebastian’s Gretchel Soltones and Camille Uy downed Mapua’s Camille de la Peña and Debbie Dultra, 21-11, 21-9, to open their title-retention bid in women’s play of the 90th NCAA beach volley tournament at the Boardwalk in Subic Bay yesterday.

Soltones and Uy, teaming up for the first time, struggled in the early going but still pulled through with their sheer talent.

“It’s our first time to play together, especially on the sand court, so we struggled a bit,” said Soltones, the reigning MVP here.

Soltones, a 19-year-old Business Management student who hails from Cebu, said they trained for a month in an indoor court at San Sebastian for their title-retention drive.
