Philippine Olympic Committee forming volley team to Southeast Asia Games

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Olympic Committee president Jose Cojuangco yesterday said the current Philippine Volleyball Federation is not the same PVF which the POC used to recognize.

“Wala na ang PVF (The PVF is gone),” said Cojuangco.

The POC executive board also came to a conclusion the other day that currently there is no volleyball association under the local Olympic body.

The POC said the PVF that was formed last year and incorporated with the Securities and Exchange Commission and headed by Karl Chan has no right to form the national team.

The POC was not informed of the new PVF incorporation and therefore the POC cannot recognize its existence.

The old PVF, formed in 2005 and headed by Gener Dungo, is the one that was recognized by the POC. But because of the new incorporation, it has been revoked and no longer exists.

POC legal counsel Ramon Malinao said the new PVF should have sought a lifting of the revocation of the old one with the SEC before they filed the new incorporation.

“Also, they should have informed the POC. By not doing so they formed an entirely new PVF that is not recognized by the POC,” said the POC lawyer.

The PVF under Chan has scheduled an election on Jan. 25. The POC is not sending a representative to observe the said exercise.

And since there’s no rightful NSA (national sport association) for volleyball right now, the POC has taken over the formation of the women’s team to the SEA Games in June.

The POC chief also welcomed the support of former Philippine Amateur Volleyball Association president and former congressman Concoy Chavez.

“When he was at the helm of Philippine volleyball we enjoyed a higher ranking. I’m happy he’s here to help us. We need a new volleyball association,” he said.

Cojuangco has given POC vice president Jose Romasanta the direct authority to form the team to the SEA Games in Singapore.

Romasanta has named Roger Gorayeb as head coach.

“It is open to everybody,” said Romasanta, who has sent out invitations to the players in the team that was formed by new PVF last October.

“They are all welcome,” said Romasanta.
