Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Arellano U overpowered Jose Rizal, 25-10, 25-14, 25-16, yesterday to remain unscathed after eight games in the 90th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

Danna Henson fired a match-high 20 hits, including 17 on kills, while CJ Rosario came back from sick bay to ram in 14 spikes for a 15-hit effort as the Lady Chiefs remained at the helm.

Arellano thus stood one game ahead of Perpetual Help and San Sebastian, which tote identical 7-1 records.

The Bombers fell to their fourth defeat against five wins for solo fifth.

In men’s action, Arellano battled from two sets down to outlast Jose Rizal, 19-25, 26-28, 25-21, 25-22, 15-6, and gain solo third at 5-3.

John Joseph Cabillan paced the Chiefs with 18 hits, 16 on attacks, while Benrasid Latip and Christopher Vidal Soriano chipped 15 and 12 markers, respectively.

Michael Edmar Tobias and team captain Joshua Manzanas unleashed a 22-hit game apiece for JRU but the duo lost steam in the decider, enabling Arellano to escape with a win.

The Bombers dropped to 2-7.
